The Pink Empire Dress

(August 2004)

Well, here is the final version of the pink dress. It gave me lots of headache. The fabric was slippery, it stretched out on some places (I didn't know I was supposed to stay-stitch those places). It is so much more drapy than my muslin fabric, it reacted totally different. But, in the end I somehow got it to fit.

But then my 18m. toddler got hold of the scissors and cut two holes in my back skirt part and one in my sleeve. I ended up just shortening the sleeves and putting some clear nail polish on the skirt holes.

I love the dress and hope it's going to last at least one more season without the holes getting too large.

Here is a side view of the dress before the sleeves had to be shortened =). I love how it hugs my body and unlike most other dresses doesn't make me larger than I actually am.

I made this dress after I made my own pattern and this muslin. The fabric had so much drape though that I had to adjust the pattern quite a bit. Here is a detail of the bodice before I took some fabric away:

But all in all this dress is a success. I hope I can make more next summer.

Things I have learned:

~ I really love the empire waist style

~ The gathers are working for me

~ I have to adjust some things for fabric that has much drape

~ I think the dress could have a more flared skirt
