The BJ 2004 bra

(May 2005)

I got a new pattern from Sewfinebras. It has a new sizing and is based on a 42 wire with the options of a deep, normal and shallow cup. The band is added based on the measurements. I first made the deep cup with a 75 band. The cups were too small, the straps too much to the side and the whole bra sat very low. With the help of Rebecca from Sewfinebras I made several alterations. I made the cups deeper, moved the strap attachement closer to the center, redrew the band to make the straps closer to the center, added hight to the band, changed a two-hook closure to a four-hook, took out a some fabric on the side of the bra. I made a new tester cup, sewed it in the old band and after several changes made a new bra. This is pretty good. Still not totally where it is supposed to be, but I am a very hard person to fit. The two major things that are still a problem on this bra is that the cups are not facing outward and that the wires still sit very low on me no matter what I do. But it's a wonderful bra and it's definitely wearable. I hope that I can get some of these issues solved.

Things I have learned:

~ many many useful altertions

~ that I am very different compared to a "standard" figure, so that's why no RTW bras ever fit me

~ that there are many options and different techniques in bra making, some I like better then others

~ making padded straps

~ it's not going to be very easy to make a good fitting bra for me, but I am not giving up!

Actively sewing since
July 2003
