The Green Flared Skirt

February 2005

I have been dreaming about this skirt for two year now (since a friend gave me the fabric), but couldn't decide what exactly to do with it. I finally decided to use Simplicity 5914 View A.

The only problem was that the pattern I have only goes up to size 12 and I knew that wouldn't be enough. So, I figured I could a bit on all the seams and if needed sew with smaller seam allowances. The idea was good, except:

1. I didn't really calculate the needed amount and it turns out I didn't "guess" correctly.

2. I marked the notches by cutting into seam allowances. So I couldn't let our the seams more then just a tad.

So, the skirt looks great and everything worked out fine, except it's too small. I guess I should have a good motivation to loose the extra baby fat =). I really like it.

The skirt is part of my planned winter capsule sewing and goes with the green velvet wrap top. The modesty panel on the top is made from the same fabric as the skirt.

Things I have learned:

~ I need to measure correctly and actually calculate the difference when enlarging a pattern

~ I need to use another way of marking my notches, so I can make narrower seam allowances if needed

~ I shouldn't be so afraid to use a new kind of fabric and wait that long to sew up something.
