The Satin Flower Skirt

August 2003

I was desperate for a Sunday skirt, so my dear husband picked out a satin rayon for me. I originally planned ot make a dress out of it. Then I decided to make rather a skirt and a top.

I first tried to make the skirt, using the bias version of McCall's 2029. Only I had to make the pattern larger, since the largest size on the pattern is 12 and that's too small.

I have never cut out anything from such fabric and so ended up not cutting exactly. Since my table is not enough for such cutting, I did it on the living room floor. But that's carpeted, so it was hard to be acurat.

I also had a very hard time setting the zipper, so it is kind of wavy. But fortunately it can be hidden by a top that mom generously let me borrow to wear with the skirt until I find something else or sew the top.

Things I have learned:

~ never cut fabric on the floor when your children are awake =)

~ stay-stitch the edges of a bias cut garmet

~ maybe interface the fabric at zipper placement

~ have a sharp needle when sewing satin rayon

Update:

(Feb 2005) I never made the top matching the skirt, because I couldn't figure out what to do out of it. I was originally planning a nursing crop to, but soon figured out that it would be a bad idea. I still have the rest of the fabric, so am thinking I either could make a sleeveless blouse, or even better yet, maybe I can still manage to make a light shorter summer dress.

Actively sewing since
