The Green Velvet Wrap Top

January 2005

I have been dreaming about a wrap top for quite a while now. And this fabric seemed right for it. It's not a knit, but some kind of woven fabric. Yet it has some stretch to it.

I used s combination for dress patterns Butterick 4063 and Butterick 4018 to make a pattern. I used 4063 view A for the wrap bodice and did a FBA on it. I shortened the dress to shirt length and then added sleeves from 4018 (actually just lengthened 4063 sleeves according to the other pattern). I omitted the zipper, since I was sure I could get into it even without it.

But when I basted the wrap bodice, I found out that it wasn't long enough and even more important that the neckline was way too low for me. So I put it away for about a month or two. The I decided I like it too much and just finished it. This is the result. I am still trying to figure out what to do about the neckline.

Things I have learned:

~ measure better when doing FBA

~ the only way I can have a wrap top, is to have some kind of modesty panel or to try a different design (with the wrap going all the way to the sleeve seam like here).

~ I really like empire waists. They show the little of figure I have without overly emphasizing other parts =).

Update (February 2005)

I have solved the neckline problem. I made green shiny skirt to go with this top and I used the fabric to make a modesty panel. Actually it's just a piece of the fabric with upper edge finished that I am going to pin with safety pins to my undergarmets. I have tried attaching it to the shirt itself, but then the wrap seems to be distorting (especially since it has elastic in the casing) and it's not as comfortable. So, this is my solution for now. I may make some other panels to go with other skirts.
