The Red T-shirt

April 2004

I have finally dared to sew with knits. After I made a blue nursing shirt , I was eager to try some more. But since I don't have any knit fabric, I decided to try and alter a shirt I already have.

It was fitted, but about 2 sizes too large. Really looked bad in the shoulder area and was way too long. So, I took it totally apart, used the pattern I had pin-traced from a favorited top and cut it out.

The only original sewing that remained is the hem on the sleeves. I used the cut off fabric to make the neckline band. I am so glad it worked!

Things I have learned:

~ in the future I will keep look out for XL good quality tshirts. That way I can make some more knit tops.

~ the best ratio for the neckline binding to the neckline is 7/8

~ the shirt is a bit too short, next time make it a bit longer

Update:

(Oct 2004) Since this was only the second knit top I made, I didn't know about using a narrow zig-zag for seams and a twin needle for hemming. The stitching broke in a few places after wearing, because it wasn't elastic enough. So, I redid most of the stitching, especially the sides. I also had to redo the hem and this time I tried tomake a lettuce edge. It actually came out pretty well. I might use it more in the future, especially for the children's clothes.

Actively sewing since
